The impact of mindfulness training on the attention to facial expressions among undergraduates

AbstractThe improvements in attention by mindfulness training have been proved. However, the effects of mindfulness training on attention to emotional stimuli were mixed. We employed a randomized, controlled design to investigate the effects of mindfulness training on attention to emotional expressions, and investigated whether baseline levels of dispositional mindfulness and emotional intelligence would moderate the intervention effects. Forty participants received 8‐week mindfulness training, and another forty participants attended two lectures about mindfulness. All participants completed the visual search task, the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, and the Emotional Intelligence Scale at both pre‐training and post‐training. The results showed that the improvements in search efficiencies were larger in the mindfulness group than those in the control group for sad and angry faces, but not for happy faces. In addition, baseline emotional intelligence but not dispositional mindfulness played a significant moderating role in the relationship between mindfulness training and emotional attention to sadness and anger. The search efficiencies of negative emotions (i.e., anger and sadness) but not positive emotions (i.e., happiness) were significantly improved by mindfulness training. Individuals with a high level of baseline emotional intelligence showed significant improvement in search efficiencies relative to those with a low level of emotional intelligence.

The Relationship of Emotional Intelligence and Psychological Reasonableness of Adolescents with the Peculiarities of Child-parent Relations

Introduction. The article is aimed at studying the relationship of emotional intelligence, as well as psychological reasonableness of adolescents with the peculiarities of the mother’s relationship to the child. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that today in Russian scientific works the topic of psychological intelligence is not sufficiently covered. The study of its connections with emotional intelligence will allow us to understand the relationship between these characteristics for a deeper understanding of the emotional sphere of adolescents, and the study of its connections with the mother’s parenting style will allow us to better understand the process of its formation.Objective. investigate the interrelationships of emotional intelligence and psychological reasonableness of adolescents with the peculiarities of maternal attitude towards them.Materials and methods. Adolescents aged 13 to 15 years (n = 43) were studied as an empirical object. To study emotional intelligence, the methodology “Emotional intelligence of adolescents” by Sadokov and Voronkin was chosen, and the “Scale of Psychological reasonableness, SPR/PMS” was used to study psychological reasonableness in the adaptation of Novikova and Kornilova. The “Teenagers about parents” technique was using the peculiarities of the mother’s relationship to the teenager were established.Results. The emotional intelligence of adolescents tends to be low, while maintaining the average values of psychological reasonableness. Statistically significant negative associations were found between hostility, inconsistency, and criticality of the mother towards the teenager with factors of emotional intelligence and psychological reasonableness. A positive relationship was also revealed between the closeness of the mother with the teenager and his psychological intelligence.Discussion. The results obtained are confirmed in the concepts of other authors. Thus, the preservation of an average level of psychological intelligence with low emotional intelligence of adolescents is explained by the abundance of psychological information in the Internet space in which adolescents spend most of their time. Data on the negative relationship of hostility and criticism of the mother with the peculiarities of emotional intelligence and psychological reasonableness are also confirmed: parents who reject, ignore and criticize a teenager can mainly raise teenagers with a low level of emotional intelligence who do not seek to discuss their problems.

Perceived Maternal Acceptance-Rejection as a Predictor of Emotional Intelligence in Adolescence

Background: Emotional intelligence (EI) plays a crucial role in the psychological development of adolescents, influencing their social behaviors and academic achievements. Previous research has established a connection between parenting styles, particularly maternal acceptance or rejection, and the development of EI in children. The warmth and support provided by a mother are essential elements that contribute significantly to the nurturing of EI during adolescence. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the predictive role of perceived maternal acceptance-rejection on the emotional intelligence of adolescents in Karachi, Pakistan, contributing to the existing body of knowledge by focusing on a non-Western context. Methods: The study was approved by relevant institutional review boards and adhered to ethical standards. A total of 600 adolescents, aged 13-17 years, were selected from various schools in Karachi, maintaining an equal distribution between genders. Participants were assessed using the Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ) Child Form for mothers and the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Adolescent Short Form (TEIQ-ASF). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0, with linear regression analysis employed to examine the relationship between perceived maternal acceptance-rejection and EI. Results: The internal consistency of the scales was confirmed, with Cronbach's alpha values of .91 for the PARQ and .84 for the TEIQ-ASF. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant predictive relationship between perceived maternal acceptance-rejection and emotional intelligence (R = .213, R² = .045, F = 28.506, p < .05). Specifically, maternal rejection was negatively associated with the EI scores of adolescents, indicating that higher levels of perceived rejection correlated with lower levels of EI. Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of maternal acceptance in the development of emotional intelligence among adolescents. These results suggest that interventions aimed at enhancing maternal acceptance could potentially foster the development of EI, thereby contributing positively to the psychological well-being and social functioning of adolescents.

Workplace Violence and Emotional Intelligence among Nursing Professionals at a National Hospital in Northern Peru

Introduction: Workplace violence is identified as a growing challenge in the healthcare sector, negatively impacting both nursing professionals and the quality of patient care. In this context, emotional intelligence emerges as a key tool for mitigating the effects of workplace violence, facilitating effective stress management, and enhancing interpersonal relationships in the workplace. Method: The study employed a quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 183 nurses from a National Hospital in Chiclayo, Peru, selected through probabilistic sampling. Two instruments were used: the EVP-health questionnaire to assess workplace violence and the TMMS-24 scale to measure emotional intelligence. Results: Findings indicate that 45.3% of respondents experienced a high level of workplace violence, while 61.8% showed a low level of emotional intelligence. Additionally, a negative correlation between workplace violence and emotional intelligence was found, demonstrating that high levels of violence are associated with low levels of emotional intelligence. Conclusions: The study concludes that enhancing emotional intelligence in nurses could be crucial in reducing workplace violence in healthcare settings. The implementation of emotional intelligence training programs for healthcare staff is suggested, not only to improve the work environment but also to enhance the quality of care provided to patients. The research highlights the need to address these aspects to promote a safer and more efficient work environment in the healthcare sector.

Perception of fake news by students with different psychological characteristics: Results of the methodological experiment

The perception of fake news has become the focus of social-humanitarian research as affecting people’s behavior. Students have always been a reactive force of society, so the question of what characteristics determine students’ perception of fake news is quite relevant. The authors consider as such characteristics the level of emotional intelligence (EI), suggestibility and psychotype. To check how these characteristics determine the perception of fake news, the Laboratory of Sociological and Focus Group Research of the RUDN University conducted a methodological experiment with the focus group method in 2022. Two groups were randomized according to the psychotype: the first group consisted of participants with a high level of EI, the second group - with a low level of EI. The groups included only those students who considered themselves capable of distinguishing fake news from real situations. Both groups watched videos that presented fake news as real. The moderator was to make participants doubt, to convince them of the reality of the news. After the group discussion, the design of the experiment was revealed to its participants. The discussion and tests before and after the discussion allowed to conclude that EI and psychotype weakly affect the capability to identify fake news under external influences, but a high level of EI determines both critical perception and ability to change one’s position, i.e. suggestibility. The participants’ logical argumentation depends on the psychotype and level of EI, but the quality of the argument seems to depend on the general erudition and education. The authors’ findings are consistent with the results of related studies, but the suggestion component of the experiment is close to everyday situations and provides opportunities for developing media literacy programs for students.

The Effects of Emotional Intelligence on Students’ Foreign Language Speaking: A Narrative Exploration in China’s Universities

In countries where people see English as a foreign language (EFL), English is merely used in public communication and EFL learners usually experience emotional issues like speaking anxiety and reflect a lower level of emotional intelligence (EI). Although previous studies have found a positive correlation between EI and EFL speaking, few studies explain how EI affects learners’ EFL speaking in terms of their contextual influence. This study aims to explore the effects of EI on English speaking in the context of China’s universities. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with two participants and was analysed through thematic narrative analysis. Findings suggest that the English-speaking environments in China’s universities are less than supportive. In this situation, when EFL learners are situated in a low-stress learning environment, they are more inclined to embrace happiness and optimism by developing specific interests to enhance their spoken English skills. However, with the stress of the test looming, they often show negative emotions such as uneasiness before exams and fear during exams. Findings highlight that EI, especially adaptability and interpersonal capability can help EFL students cope with their emotional issues, regulate their behaviours, and participate in and profit from non-interactive and (partially) interactive English-speaking practices.

A STUDY ON EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Although a persons feelings cannot be observed directly by others but they can be inferred from overt behavior and verbal report of introspection, as no one can doubt the reality of emotions as conscious experiences. Emotions are inherently neither positive nor negative. Exhibiting the emotion is very easy but doing it at the right time, place as well as right person and to do the right degree is difficult. In fact, each feeling provides us with vital and potentially profitable information every minute a day. The management of emotions has given rise to the most talk about term Emotional Intelligence. Emotional intelligence is developed through experiences. Competencies keep on growing through the experiences; people get better and better in handling emotions, influencing others and in social adroitness. It encompasses awareness about our ones own capabilities, strengths and weaknesses. There are many examples of how emotional intelligence can play a role in daily life, it can be powerful, but also it is temporary. The present study was conducted to know the emotional intelligence among secondary school students. Samples of 90 students were selected from different types of high school (rural and urban) from Mysuru district. After all the data analysis and interpretation it is found that 82 students are having high level of emotional intelligence , 7 students are having normal level of emotional intelligence , no students are having low level of emotional intelligence. Students’ empathy in the context of extremist risks

In unstable conditions, the scale of extremism as a form of illegal actions tends to grow. The statistical decrease in the number of extremist crimes was the result of legislative changes. In the risk group, there are primarily young people from 18 to 30 years old, who are more susceptible to psychological pressure from extremist and terrorist organizations, and especially the student youth, who have already begun to escape from parental control but still did not achieve the full adult responsibility. Public calls for extremist acts are based on various social-psychological mechanisms of influence and aim specifically at this age group. A low level of emotional intelligence, empathy and psychological well-being is essential for entering an extremist environment. In January- February 2022, a survey was conducted to test the hypothesis of a relationship between the level of empathy and propensity to violent extremism. The article presents the results of this survey, such as the lack of direct relationship between the level of empathy and the age. The survey’s unexpected result is that the general level of boys’ empathy is higher than that of girls, and girls are more likely to be extremist when they have a higher level of empathy. Thus, an increasing level of the youth’s empathy seems to be a way to prevent extremist behavior withing a comprehensive program but not a universal strategy for countering youth extremism. The article can become a basis for an effective pedagogical strategy to prevent extremism and to reduce the youths’ risks of being involved in it. The developed approach should take into account the gender peculiarities of empathy, which influence the manifestations of violent extremism.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE PREDICT THE MANAGERIAL EFFECTIVENESS OF MANAGERS IN PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS

This study made an attempt to find out the relationship between managerial effectiveness and emotional intelligence of branch managers of public sector banks like state Bank of India, Punjab National bank and Indian Bank in the district of Kolkata, West Bengal. The sample consists of 174 branch managers. Stratified random sampling method is used. The data collected through standard structure questionnaire named as Managerial Effectiveness Scale developed by Prof. S. Gupta (1996) and “Emotional Intelligence Test Scale developed by Dr. N. K. Chadha and Dr. D. Singh (2001) was administered. The five hypotheses formulated in the study are tested using appropriate statistical tests like Mean, S. D., t test, ANOVA, correlation and regression analysis to assess the managerial effectiveness of public banks branch managers with respect to emotional intelligence. The results revealed that there is no significance mean difference within the public banks (SBI, PNB, and IB). The result also exhibits that managerial effectiveness is positively correlated with the emotional intelligence and managers having high level of emotional intelligence are more effective than managers having low level of emotional intelligence. It is conclude from the results that emotional intelligence is a significant predictor of managerial effectiveness of branch managers in public sector banks. Association between work fatigue and cognitive function among Lebanese health-care professionals: the moderating effect of emotional intelligence

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to assess the association between work-related fatigue and cognitive impairment among Lebanese health-care professionals with a closer look into the moderating role of emotional intelligence. This cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2021 and January 2022; 406 Lebanese health-care professionals were recruited through convenience sampling. Moderate analysis showed that with low levels of emotional intelligence, more physical, mental, or emotional work fatigue was significantly associated with lower cognitive function scores. These scores get better in people with moderate and high emotional intelligence for the same levels of work fatigue. Health-care workers, especially in Lebanon, are subject to a decline in their cognitive function when faced to high work fatigue loads in all its types, physical, mental, and emotional, along with the country’s stressors. Here comes the role of emotional intelligence, where for the same level of fatigue, professionals with high emotional intelligence tend to have better cognitive functioning

Relationship between child-to-parent violence and cumulative childhood adversity: the mediating role of parental attachment, resilience, and emotional intelligence.

Recent research on aggressor profiles in child-to-parent violence (CPV) seems to provide promising results. However, this phenomenon has been poorly addressed in the adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) framework. This study aimed to explore the frequency of different types of ACEs and cumulative ACEs in adolescents who exert CPV, to analyze the differences between aggressors with different levels of cumulative ACEs in parental attachment, resilience, and emotional intelligence, and to evaluate the associations between these variables, as well as a possible mediational model. A total of 3,142 Spanish adolescents (50.7% girls) aged between 12 and 18 years from educational centers participated. Adolescents who exerted CPV presented higher rates of ACEs both independently and cumulatively than those without CPV. Aggressors with cumulative ACEs (88%) in general presented more insecure parental attachment, lower resilience, and lower emotional intelligence than those without cumulative ACEs, and, in turn, aggressors with high levels of cumulative ACEs than those with low levels of cumulative ACEs. Significant associations were identified between CPV, ACEs, insecure parental attachment, resilience, and emotional intelligence. The mediation model suggested that ACEs are related to CPV through preoccupied and traumatized parental attachment and also through low levels of emotional intelligence. The findings provide a better understanding of CPV from the perspective of ACEs, especially of those cases that involve an accumulation of adverse experiences during childhood, and suggest greater professional attention to these cases with the design of specialized CPV intervention programs.

Impact of transformational leadership on the person-organization fit of Chinese nurses: The moderating effect ofemotional intelligence.

To explore the relationships between transformational leadership and person-organization fit, as well as to test the moderating effects of emotional intelligence. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used to conduct an online questionnaire survey among 326 nurses in Chinese hospitals between March and June 2022. Transformational leadership, person-organization fit and emotional intelligence were measured using the Person-Organization Fit Scale, Transformational Leadership Questionnaire and Emotional Intelligence Scale. Hierarchical multiple linear regression models and simple slope analyses were used. Transformational leadership had a significant positive impact on person-organization fit. Furthermore, emotional intelligence had a conditional moderating effect on the relationship between transformational leadership and nurses' person-organization fit. Under a high level of emotional intelligence, transformational leadership had a stronger positive effect on person-organization fit, while under a low level of emotional intelligence, the relationship between the two was not significant. Transformational leadership has a positive predictive effect on person-organization fit, but this positive predictive effect is driven by conditional effect. The emotional intelligence of nurses plays a moderating role between them.

Engineering Students Education in Sustainability: The Moderating Role of Emotional Intelligence

In the context of a lack of quantitative research approaching an engineering education in sustainability, this cross-sectional study aims to investigate whether efforts to promote sustainability education contribute to shaping the beliefs, attitudes, and intentions towards sustainability in a sample of Portuguese engineering schools students; in addition, this study investigates whether emotional intelligence impacts the students’ motivation to learn more about sustainability and whether it plays a role in moderating the relationships between those variables. A survey was carried out on a sample of 184 students from two major Portuguese engineering schools. A model was found showing that beliefs, attitudes, and gender are predictors of students’ intentions towards sustainability, explaining 62.6% of its variance. Furthermore, the findings reveal that women have stronger beliefs and intentions towards sustainability than men and that students with higher emotional intelligence are more motivated to learn more about sustainability. In addition, emotional intelligence has a negative and significant moderating impact on the relationship between attitudes and students’ intentions towards sustainability, being stronger for lower levels of emotional intelligence and having a similar, yet non-significant, effect on the relationship between beliefs and students’ intentions towards sustainability. The results suggest that emotional intelligence should be considered a competence and a tool in engineering education in order to enhance students’ inclination towards sustainable development.

Emotional and Spiritual intelligence and their coping ability among the nursing students in selected settings in Kerala

Nursing course is a crucial period where the students need both physical and mentally support to cope up this dynamic transitional period of new independence from their parents. The nursing students have to encounter many problems to make successful adaptation during the life of stress. They cope up the changes in this period of transition in a healthy manner and if not can become a burden to them and put them into risk of negative health behaviors with tendency to be carry into their adulthood. Emotional intelligence and spiritual intelligence together with coping ability are seen to promote better health behavior. A quantitative descriptive study was conducted among 120 undergraduate nursing students who study in two different institutes were chosen through convenient sampling technique. Descriptive and inferential statics like independent t test was used to compare the levels of the Emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence, coping ability of the nursing students of two institutes in Kannur. It is interpreted that spiritual intelligence can boost positive health behavior and it is associated with emotional intelligence and coping ability and have an important implication for both health practice and policy especially in nursing education institutions. This electronic document on emotional and spiritual intelligence of the nursing students in coping their life transitions was carried out with a view to promote healthy coping style in their professional and personal life by assessing and comparing the levels of emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence and coping ability of nursing students in Kannur District.This study also emphasized the need for adopting emotional intelligence and spiritual intelligence in maintaining their resiliency throughout their life. Out of the 120 sample, majority of the sample both group one and two 56.66 % in first and 48.33 % in the second group had low levels of Emotional Intelligence, 51.66 % of the first group possess low level of spiritual intelligence whereas the 70% of the second group possess low levels of spiritual intelligence and both the two groups majority (90.66%) of the first group and 85% of the second group have low levels of resiliency or coping ability. Similarly, 73% of the first group and 70% of the second group have low resilience problem based coping ability. In case of emotional based coping ability majority of the first group (71.66%) were medium level of Resilient where as 61.66% of the sample of the second group have low level of resiliency.

Association between emotional intelligence and stuttering in school-age children in Kosovo

Several studies have shown that emotional intelligence can impact stuttering in children and that these children begin to exhibit impaired emotional and social behaviour from the age of 3 years onwards. These difficulties have also been observed in adults who stutter. The purpose of this research study was to examine the association between emotional intelligence factors and stuttering in school-age children in Kosovo. The outcome of this study will provide a baseline to compare factors related to the emotional intelligence of children who stutter and those who do not. This descriptive cross-sectional study included a sample of 62 participants stratified into the two groups: a group of children who stutter (N = 31) and a control group of children who do not stutter (N = 31). Participants ranged in age from 8-15 years. The instrument used for data collection was a self-report emotional intelligence questionnaire for children: The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - Child Short Form (TEIQue-CSF) (Mavroveli & Petrides, 2009). We collected and analysed data on the level of emotional intelligence of children who stutter and those who do not. Our findings show that adaptability as a construct of emotional intelligence is observed at a lower level in children who stutter (M = 21.5) than those who do not (M = 40.9). In addition, we observed lower adaptability in male students (M = 27.9) than females (M = 35.2) in both groups of participants. Furthermore, children who stutter showed lower levels of emotional expression (M = 23.4 vs 39.7) and emotional perception (M = 22.3 vs 42.8) than those who do not stutter. Based on our analysis, we concluded that school-age children who stutter have significantly lower levels of emotional intelligence than their peers who do not stutter.

Career success: Analysis and development of career opportunities in students

Effective implementation and development of the career development programmes determine the economic growth of countries. The research aims to discuss and analyze the characteristics and elements of the students’ career opportunities. The results help the scholars select the proper type of analysis and appropriate tools to examine the elements of career opportunities. The sample consisted of 102 third and fourth year students from NJSC Toraighyrov University. The following methods and criteria were used to analyze the initial stage of the student career development: emotional intelligence (based on the methodology proposed by J. N. Hall), communication skills (Test of communication skills by L. Mikhelson), self-assessment (S. A. Budassi’s method of self-assessment), career value orientations (Edgar Schein’s Career Anchors), motivation for success (The Questionnaire by T. Ehlers). The surveys were conducted using Google Forms. The results helped to identify the characteristics and elements of the students’ career opportunities. The data collected at NJSC Toraighyrov University of the Republic of Kazakhstan show that 35% of students have a low level of emotional intelligence, 47% have addictive behaviors during communication, 31% of respondents have low self-esteem, lack of motivation for success was identified in 18% of students. Only a small number of students could clearly define their career orientations regarding Lifestyle Integration, Challenge and Management. The research suggests that it is important to introduce career development programmes that empower students and encourage them to build professional career paths in the future. Used as a learning framework, the Career coaching programme helps to design, develop, assess and implement each element of the career opportunities. The implementation advantages of the Career coaching programme for students as part of the educational process are discussed in the present research. The programme Career coaching will develop awareness and advance careers among graduate students. Moreover, it will provide a guideline for the first steps toward developing a successful career path.

Attached but Lonely: Emotional Intelligence as a Mediator and Moderator between Attachment Styles and Loneliness.

(1) Background: The aim of the presented research was to examine if emotional intelligence (EI) could be regarded as a mechanism mediating the relationship between attachment and loneliness. The authors also tested the moderating role of this variable, investigating whether EI was a protective factor against loneliness in insecurely attached individuals. (2) Methods: In two cross-sectional studies (N = 246 in Study 1 and N = 186 in Study 2), participants completed a set of questionnaires measuring attachment styles, trait emotional intelligence, and loneliness. (3) Results: Both studies revealed a consistent pattern of results, indicating a dual role of EI in the relationships between attachment styles and loneliness. Firstly, EI was a mediator between attachment and loneliness-both anxious and avoidant attachment were associated with a low level of EI, which in turn translated into increased loneliness. Secondly, EI moderated the relationship between anxious attachment and loneliness. It turned out that the strength of the positive relationship between anxious attachment and loneliness decreased with an increase in EI. (4) Conclusions: These results point to EI as an underlying mechanism between insecure attachment and loneliness. They also suggest that EI is an important psychological resource protecting anxiously attached individuals against a subjective sense of social isolation.

Analyzing protective factors for adolescents’ mental health during COVID-19 pandemic in Spain: A longitudinal study

ObjectiveThis study examined the protective role of self-esteem and perceived emotional intelligence on mental health problems in Spanish adolescents during COVID-19 pandemic. MethodParticipants (N=139; Mage=13.83years; SD=0.96; 63.8% female) completed measures before the outbreak of COVID-19 (T1) and during the first wave of the pandemic in Spain (T2). Participants self-reported emotional intelligence, self-esteem, mental health problems and suicidal behavior. ResultsAdolescent mental health problems were equally affected by COVID-19 pandemic according to gender, age and lockdown conditions. Adolescents with low levels of emotional intelligence and self-esteem at T1 showed a significant decrease in self-reported anxiety, depression, stress and suicidal behavior at T2. However, adolescents with average or high levels of emotional intelligence and self-esteem at T1 showed no significant changes in mental health problems at T2. Self-esteem at T1 meditated the relationships between emotional intelligence at T1 (clarity and repair) and emotional symptoms at T2 (depression, anxiety and stress). Furthermore, the relationship between self-esteem and anxiety symptoms was moderated by the number of people living together during COVID-19 lockdown. ConclusionOur findings highlight the protective role of pre-pandemic development of self-esteem and emotional intelligence in mitigating the impact of COVID-19 outbreak on adolescent mental health during the pandemic.

Motivations for Social Media Use as Mediators in the Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Social Media Addiction

In the midst of an ever-changing world that we inhabit today, many facets that were once viewed as ‘intruding’, ‘alien’, or utter anomalies, have turned into integral linchpins of our day-to-day lives, and without them, the modern dynamics of human essence are portrayed as incompetent. Amongst those pivotal factors are the emergence of the Internet, social media platforms, and the inevitable ascendancy of the virtual world. That is, the perception of what is deemed incongruent is primarily dependent on how well one seems to utilize social media, as it is the cutting edge of the contemporary means of social evolution. Indeed, the conception of social engagement has become completely novel nowadays from what it was in the past, and despite the fact that communication has been altered to fit ‘electronic screens’, it has facilitated the mechanisms of communication in a way that is simply undeniable. Howbeit, on the other hand, this cacophony of interactive tools has created one of the virtual world’s most obstreperous dogmas, that is, social media addiction. The rapid changes in external methods of communication have contributed to the stripping of our innate roots of ordeal human communication and thus completely remolded our behaviors in a whirlwind of what seemed like a revolutionary momentum. That is, socialization and the formation of both individual identity and communal solidarity are essentially centered around our online practices, where the dependencies of such shift in communication transmit further into the entirety of our beings and seep into our subconsciousness. Thus, among the notions of social media’s intermingling with human intellect, is the deployment of emotional intelligence (EI) in dealing with social media addiction. Formulating the crux to this research, this paper seeks to shed light on the role of EI in either dampening or arousing the desires of obsessive social media use, especially since there is a major dearth of studies that observe the crucialness of EI management in controlling addictive behaviors on various social media platforms. Through the use of a quantitative research approach, this study examined the role of several motivations for social media use, namely, entertainment, communication, self-expression, and relationship maintenance, in moderating the relationship between EI and social media addiction. This was achieved by distributing questionnaires to 400 participants aged between 18 and 25 in the Kampala Region of Uganda, using a random sampling method. Findings elucidated that EI is negatively correlated to social media addiction, implying that a higher level of EI translates to a lower desire for social media addiction and vice versa, while all four motivations for social media use were significantly correlated with social media addiction. Furthermore, results conveyed that entertainment and relationship management are amongst the top stimulating mediators for the relationship between EI and social media addiction. However, this also implies that if individuals have low levels of EI, it does not necessarily guarantee that they will most likely adopt pathological social media behaviors, simply because the motivations for using such online platforms critically vary from one individual to the other, while also simultaneously keeping an analytical eye on the role of freewill in promulgating this dilemma in possible future research.

Impact of Emotional Intelligence on Job Performance of Nurses with the Mediating Effect of Job Satisfaction

The current study investigates the effect of Emotional Intelligence (EI) on the performance of nurses with the mediating effect of job satisfaction. This study measures the concept of EI, Job Performance, and Job Satisfaction across 385 respondents from various private and government hospitals and the locale of the study was the Delhi NCR region. PLS-SEM was used for analyzing the data. The result indicates that a relationship exists between these three variables and job satisfaction mediates the relationship between Emotional Intelligence & Job performance. The findings of the current study showed that awareness of emotions, regulation of emotions, and managing of emotions are the significant components of EI which enhances leadership, critical care, professional development, interpersonal relationships, planning and collaboration aspects of Job Performance. Further, the mediating effects support that the positive working conditions and organizations’ compensation policy fetches higher level of Job Satisfaction among the professional and nursing employees who are satisfied as well as having a higher level of Emotional Quotient would be a better performer than the employees who are having a low level of emotional intelligence. It can be recommended that while recruiting nursing employees along with their technical competence EI competence needs to be equally emphasized. Similarly, EI needs to be integrated into healthcare practice guidelines and performance evaluations as it is one of the important assets of individual persona.
